President Joe Biden speaks during the United Nations General Assembly

Biden says some things are more important than staying in power

President Joe Biden addressed the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, emphasizing that “some things are more important than staying in power,” as he made a final appeal for the values of democracy to the assembly of global leaders.

In the concluding moments of his last address to the UNGA, Biden reflected on his choice to withdraw from his reelection campaign earlier this summer.

“Serving as president has been the greatest honor of my life,” Biden stated. “There is still so much I wish to accomplish.”

He continued, “As much as I cherish this role, my love for my country surpasses it. After 50 years of public service, I believe it is time for a new generation of leaders to guide our nation forward.”

Having spent years advocating for the significance of democracy and the critical juncture he perceives the world to be at, Biden urged his fellow leaders to prioritize their citizens over personal ambitions.

“My fellow leaders, let us always remember that some things are more important than remaining in power. The well-being of your people is what truly matters,” he asserted.

“Always remember, we are here to serve the people, not the other way around. The future will be shaped by those who empower their citizens to live freely, think independently, innovate, educate, and love openly without fear.”

“That is the essence of democracy,” Biden concluded. “It is not the property of any single nation.”
