Hungary proposes the EU discuss with Trump before deciding on renewing sanctions against Russia

Hungary has yet to make a decision regarding its support for the renewal of European Union sanctions on Russia, which are set to expire at the end of this month. The country believes that the EU should consult with the incoming Trump administration before making any determinations, according to Hungary’s EU minister.

Minister Janos Boka stated to reporters in Brussels, “It is only logical that we seek the perspective of the new U.S. administration on the future of the sanctions regime before committing to a six-month extension.”

Boka further noted, “No decision has been reached regarding Hungary’s stance at this time. We prefer to wait until we understand the U.S. administration’s views on the sanctions moving forward.”

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EU has implemented 15 rounds of sanctions and is currently preparing a 16th set. The sanctions under consideration encompass various economic sectors and involve the freezing of Russian central bank assets, as mentioned by Boka.

The EU typically renews existing sanctions every six months, requiring unanimous agreement from all 27 member states. Hungary has maintained closer economic and political ties with Moscow compared to other EU nations.
