Airbus Helicopters has successfully completed the maiden flight of the second prototype of France’s next-generation H160M Guépard military helicopter, marking another major milestone in one of Europe’s most ambitious rotorcraft modernization programs.
Unlike the civilian H160, the latest prototype debuted in an eye-catching all-black military paint scheme, reflecting its role as a multi-mission combat helicopter designed for modern battlefield operations.
The successful first flight demonstrates continued progress in the French Armed Forces’ Joint Light Helicopter Program, which aims to replace several legacy helicopter fleets with a single advanced platform.

France Replacing Five Helicopter Types with One Platform
The H160M Guépard is the military version of Airbus’ civilian H160 medium helicopter and has been developed specifically for France’s Joint Light Helicopter Program.
Under the modernization initiative, France plans to acquire 169 H160M helicopters for the:
- French Army
- French Navy
- French Air and Space Force
The aircraft will replace five aging helicopter fleets:
- Gazelle
- Alouette III
- Dauphin
- Panther
- Fennec
By adopting a common platform, France expects to significantly reduce maintenance costs, simplify logistics, streamline pilot training, and improve operational readiness across all three military branches.
Prototype 2 Begins Extreme Weather Testing
Airbus is building three flying prototypes to accelerate development.
The first prototype, which made its maiden flight in July 2025, has already accumulated more than 72 flight hours, validating flight performance ahead of planned weapons testing.
The newly flown Prototype 2 has a different mission.
It will undergo extensive environmental trials, including:
- Desert heat testing
- Arctic cold-weather operations
- High-temperature system validation
- Low-temperature reliability testing
These evaluations will ensure the helicopter can operate effectively in the wide range of climates encountered during French military deployments worldwide.
Airbus officials have reported positive feedback from pilots involved in the early flight-test campaign.
Advanced Sensors and Battlefield Avionics
The H160M differs substantially from its civilian counterpart through a comprehensive suite of military systems.
Key onboard technologies include:
- Thales FlytX digital avionics
- Airbus integrated mission management system
- Safran Euroflir 410 electro-optical targeting sensor
- Thales AirMaster C surveillance radar
- Full-spectrum electronic self-protection suite
Together, these systems provide advanced intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), targeting, and survivability capabilities required for modern combat operations.
HForce Weapon System Adds Combat Capability
The H160M has been designed as a true multi-role combat helicopter.
Using Airbus’ modular HForce weapon system, it can be equipped with:
- 12.7mm heavy machine gun pods
- Guided rockets
- 7.62mm door-mounted machine guns
- Precision fire support weapons
This modular approach allows the helicopter to rapidly switch between transport, reconnaissance, close air support, and armed security missions depending on operational requirements.
First Airbus Helicopter Designed for Drone Teaming
One of the H160M’s most significant technological advances is its built-in manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) capability.
According to Airbus, the H160M is the first helicopter in its product line designed from the outset to directly cooperate with unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
The capability allows helicopter crews to:
- Control supporting drones
- Receive real-time reconnaissance feeds
- Extend surveillance range
- Improve battlefield situational awareness
- Reduce operational risk before entering contested areas
Drone teaming is increasingly viewed as a critical capability for next-generation military aviation.
Modern Engines and Improved Efficiency
The six-ton H160M is powered by Safran Arrano engines and incorporates 68 patented design innovations aimed at improving:
- Fuel efficiency
- Flight safety
- Reliability
- Environmental performance
- Maintenance efficiency
The helicopter also benefits from operational lessons learned from six civilian H160 helicopters already used by the French Navy for maritime search-and-rescue missions.
According to Airbus, those aircraft have demonstrated strong reliability during more than two years of demanding operational service.
Third Prototype to Support Naval Testing
A third H160M prototype, configured specifically for naval operations, is scheduled to join the flight-test campaign in 2027.
This aircraft will evaluate:
- Shipboard operations
- Maritime mission systems
- Naval-specific equipment
- Compatibility with French Navy vessels
Meanwhile, Airbus has already begun production of the H160M at its Donauwörth, Germany facility, allowing manufacturing to progress alongside flight testing in order to meet France’s planned delivery schedule.
